a new year is here, it's time to get organized ... in every aspect of your life.
The new year is here and it's a time where everyone makes a resolution to reorganize their life. Most want to gift themselves a new body, other a new career but why not give yourself and your family the gift of being prepared.
we are talking pre-planning.
It's not about picking the casket or flowers - it's about preparing yourself and your family for the inevitable. It's simply educating yourself about your options and giving yourself the power to choose your final wishes.
what should i do?
At Celebrate Life we have easy to use pre-planning packages. They include a few simple fill in blanks forms to organize your ideas and plans.
1. my funeral wishes
This document includes all the questions to ask yourself about your funeral itself. Questions about final disposition, cost, notes to family and can even go into detail about smaller aspects including music, flowers and readings. You can add as little or as much as you'd like. But it doesn't end when you write these things down. You must then talk to your family about what you'd like. These conversation are not easy but can save your loved ones must stress, arguments and grief in a time that is anything but easy.
2. list of assets
This document is created for the person you will name as your Executor - or if by some reason you do not have a Will, your next-of-kin. This person will need to take care of your Estate and this document will help them do so in an organized and stress free way. List of Assets will include everything from properties to life insurance and everything in between. You will need to make "that person" - your Executor or next-of-kin aware of where you are storing the document and make sure that it is kept somewhere safe.
what about pre-arranging?
Pre-arranging is where you sit down with a Funeral Professional and discuss the real details of your Funeral. You will fill out a Pre-arranged contract and make all your decisions at that time. Again .. it's not about picking your flowers specifically (that we will leave for the "My Funeral Wishes" but deciding how much you'd like to spend on flowers. You can pick a specific casket if you'd like or decide on a budget. The advantage to Pre-arranging that most people do not know is that you are locking yourself into today's prices and over time inflation will affect Funeral costs but it will not affect you with your Pre-arranged contract. The last portion of the contract is signing and deciding how your Funeral will be paid for. There are two options when you are paying for you Pre-arranging:
1. Paying with funds that will be placed in trust for you
2. Putting your Funeral home on your Life Insurance as a beneficiary
You can choose to pay for your Funeral ahead of time. This money is put in Trust for you and will incur interest. This money is yours to be used for your Funeral but can also be pulled at any time.
You can also choose to add your Funeral home onto your Life Insurance as a beneficiary and have your Pre-arranged contract paid out in this way when you die.
Lastly, something else that most people don't know is that you can cancel your Pre-arranged contract at any time with little to no penalties (typically the Funeral home will only charge you a small administration fee).
